Hueco Tanks Unmasking: Pictograph Scanning Proposal

Institution: Texas Parks & Wildlife Department

Team: Oswaldo Veliz

Following the research performed at IAAC’s newest building, an idea arose of taking the skills learned and applying them to the Bouldering Mecca Hueco Tanks in El Paso, Texas. With the newly gained skills the possibility exists to perform a research utilizing AGV’s such as the husky used at IAAC and perform thorough scanning of an active archeological site to try to locate and analyze pictographs not detected before. Moreover an initial exploration could utilize photos/scans of known (existing pictographs) to understand possible pigments to look for and create an initial algorithm.

  1. Advanced Detection Capabilities: The specialized cameras and sensors can detect variations in pigment and rock composition that might be invisible to the human eye.

  2. Real-Time Analysis: The ability to analyze findings in real-time can accelerate the research process, allowing for immediate adjustments to the exploration strategy based on the data collected.

  3. Digital Archiving: The data collected can be used to create a digital archaeological library, preserving the findings for future generations and making them accessible to researchers and the public worldwide.
